Lesson Study Group at Mills College
www.lessonresearch.net
Our group recently added a new website section, focused on teacher learning during lesson study.
We explore three different frameworks. A look at each phase of the lesson study cycle–Study, Plan, Teach, Reflect–features video clips and reflection questions for the learning that occurs during that phase.
A second framework posits four major dimensions of growth during lesson study–in educators’ knowledge, agency, beliefs and collegial culture. Video clips of lesson study meetings and quotes from educators highlight each dimension of growth
Third we use a Knowledge Integration perspective to ask how lesson study can reshape established beliefs and knowledge. This perspective illuminates the experiences that lead to changes in firmly-held beliefs. Video from lesson study groups focused on fractions capture the conversations that elicit and support re-examination of instructional knowledge and beliefs.
These frameworks are intended to start a conversation with teachers and researchers interested in teachers’ learning during lesson study. What is useful and what needs to be changed? What is missing?
